When Fig Coxbury buys a house on West Barrett Street, it’s not because she likes the neighborhood, or even because she likes the house. It’s because everything she desires is next door: The husband, the child, and the life that belongs to someone else.
Whenever I pick up a Tarryn Fisher novel I know I won’t be disappointed. Her writing style and characterization are second to none. Fisher has this uncanny ability to write stories that are messed up in all the best ways. Bad Mommy is a showcase of that ability.
Bad Mommy follows Fig as she becomes obsessed with a little girl she believes is her daughter reincarnated. She then buys the house next door and inserts herself in their lives.
The first section of this novel is told from Fig’s perspective. Fig is laser focused on the family next door that everything else in her life takes a backseat. She’s manipulative, crafty, and, sometimes, scary in her devotion. Living inside Fig’s head can be disorienting at times, but nonetheless fascinating. Fisher’s ability to occupy that headspace and portray it with authenticity is incredible.
The perspective then shifts two more times before the end of the novel. Each of the new perspectives gives the reader a different view and sense of who Fig is as a character while also giving insight into the perspective character. I was slightly disappointed that the perspective shifted, but the subtlety of Fisher’s writing really comes through with the perspective change. There are certain things that were established that are later overturned in a different perspective making readers rethink almost everything about the novel.
Overall, Bad Mommy is fantastic novel if you’re looking to get into the headspace of a sociopath and psychopath. Everything about this book is disturbing as Fisher takes her readers on a journey through the minds of people you hope you never meet.
