Hermione’s eighth year at Hogwarts is already going to be difficult in the aftermath of the war, but is further thrown into upheaval when Headmistress McGonagall orders a re-sorting of all students to promote inter-house unity. But when the Sorting Hat sends Hermione to Ravenclaw with Draco – and without Harry or Ron – how will she cope?

The Eagle’s Nest was my first ever Dramione fanfiction and I see the appeal. Hermione and Draco embody the enemies-to-lovers trope perfectly. If done correctly, their eventual coupling can be powerfully emotional.

The reason I picked The Eagle’s Nest as my first Dramione fanfiction is because of the premise. The students are invited back for an eighth year at Hogwarts and in an attempt at reunification and healing after the war, the students are re-sorted.

The biggest criticism I have of the The Eagle’s Nest and the reason I rated it four stars is that it’s too long. However, one of the aspects I enjoyed most about the novel was being able to explore Hogwarts, the characters, and all the complicated relationship between the characters fraught with trauma from the war.

The mental health of the characters plays an important role throughout the novel. Hermione deals with panic attacks, Pansy is developing an addiction, Daphne is struggling with an eating disorder, and Harry is plagued by nightmares to name a few. While HeartOfAspen deals with the characters’ mental health well, Daphne’s eating disorder is not given the same treatment. HeartOfAspen does mention in chapter notes that Hermione is not equipped to deal with Daphne, which kind of reads like an excuse.

The Eagle’s Nest is not as spicy as I thought it was going to be. It’s certainly not a young adult read, however there are moments when it comes across as preachy in regards to abstinence and religion.

I will say that this fanfiction got me very interested in Nott as a character. I’ll be on the lookout for more fictions with him as a character!

Overall, The Eagle’s Nest was my first Dramione fanfiction and it won’t be my last. The Eagle’s Nest is a soft introduction to the world of Dramione fanfiction I cannot wait to get lost in.
