All the Young Dudes is my first foray into fanfiction and it won’t be my last. This book has opened up a new obsession for me and I just can’t get enough.

All the Young Dudes follows the Marauders, Remus, Sirius, James, and Peter, at Hogwarts. Book 1 covers years 1 through 4 as they meet then eventually become inseparable. 

All the Young Dudes is told from Remus’ perspective as he’s introduced to Hogwarts by none other than Albus Dumbledore. 

One of the biggest strengths of this novel is MsKingBean89’s writing. They were able to mimic she who must not be named, so All the Young Dudes reads as authentic. I honestly forgot I was reading fanfiction. The opening sequence reminded me a lot of the flashback sequences in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince between Dumbledore and Riddle. 

One of the only criticisms I can levy at the novel is its slow pace. However, I loved it. This slow pace and almost no real plot allows readers to simmer in the world with these characters as they slowly develop. I honestly couldn’t get enough.

As year 4 comes to a close, the war with Voldemort slowly begins to make an appearance. It’s very minor and almost glossed over because of Remus’ perspective as he’s out of touch with the outer wizarding world.

One of my favourite parts of the novel is getting glimpses of Sirius’ life as a Black and the first of his family to be sorted into Gryfindor. I wish All the Young Dudes was written with multiple perspectives so that we could have seen more of his family dynamic and the rise of Voldemort.

Overall, All the Young Dudes is everything I would have wanted from an official prequel story. It’s cannon in my eyes and that’s all that matters.
