Onyx is a game changer of a novel. Compared to Obsidian, it’s a serious thrill ride with very real consequences. The fun and light heartedness of Obsidian is cast in the dark shadow of the events of the previous novel and its consequences.
Onyx broke my heart. Everything Katy has done as been in service of proving herself to be a strength, not a weakness. Despite her best efforts, they blow up in her face in the worst ways possible. All of her choices have consequences and they broke my heart. This is what I love most about this series. Katy is a flawed character and Armentrout isn’t afraid to showcase it. A lot of authors would be hesitant to lay so much culpability on their main character, but Armentrout embraces it to its fullest extent. This is what makes Katy a brilliant character.
Katy and Daemon are one of my favourite couples. My OTP if you will. Katy doesn’t cave to Daemon despite his best efforts and Katy brings out a more gentle and sympathetic side of Daemon. They compliment each other in interesting ways that keeps coming back.
My absolute favourite part of this novel is Daemon’s inability to say Blake’s name. It’s such a power move and I fall for it every time. It makes me laugh and swoon, especially when it comes from Daemon.
Overall, I’ve come to realize this series is timeless. I haven’t read through its entirety since 2012, five years ago, so I was a little afraid that I outgrew the story and characters. So I’m absolutely pleased to find out I have not outgrown them despite the age difference between the characters and myself. I would absolutely recommend this series to everyone looking for a story to lose yourself in completely. There are some novels that hook and then there are the novels that suck you in and do not let go, even after you’ve finished it. The Lux series will have you wanting to reread as soon as you’ve finished.
