Unfortunately, I’m in the minority when I say Big Little Lies is a complete waste of time and energy. It’s a 400-page novel with about 50 pages worth of action. Big Little Lies follows three housewives as they navigate the political and social minefield that is having a child in kindergarten.
This is the second Liane Moriarty book I’ve read and it will be the last. Her writing style and characters are not things I appreciate. Her characters are all the same: neurotic, boring, and dull housewives who never have a good relationship with their husbands. None of the characters are particularly interesting or engaging. Each of Moriarty’s characters lacks anything resembling a personality, which makes reading a chore.
The mystery of this book isn’t visited or revealed until the end, so it felt like I was reading a 400-page novel about the mundane lives of these women with a 50-page twist at the end. The twist was interesting and surprised me (which is why I gave it 2 stars instead of one), however it was interesting and surprising because the mystery is barely referred to in the previous 400 pages. There were times I forgot I was reading a mystery novel.
Overall, Big Little Lies is an absolute disappointment of a novel. It’s boring, dull, and mundane in the worst possible ways. The only reason I did not DNF this book is so that I could say I will never read another Liane Moriarty book again.
