3 and a half stars

Black Swan Affair follows Maverick and her tumultuous love affair between two brothers. When the brother she fell in love with first leaves to make a name for himself but comes back engaged to her sister she decides to get revenge by marrying the other brother.

I didn’t enjoy this book as much as I  thought I would. The characters are compelling and the story is interesting, but the format the story is told in made me feel disconnected from the characters and their relationships.

The story is told from the past and the present. I understand this choice because the story takes place over many years and it’s not feasible to write an 800 page romance novel. However, because of the missing pages describing their pasts I didn’t feel a connection between the main characters. Their relationship in the past felt nonexistent and lacked any sort of spark, so I wasn’t surprised by which brother won the main character’s love in the end.

What I loved most about this book was Maverick herself. She’s a down to earth and real character. She’s not afraid to speak her mind and pursue what she wants. Her perspective was refreshing and made reading a joy.

Overall, Black Swan Affair has a strong and interesting premise but the execution did not do the relationships justice ultimately leading to a story that doesn’t connect with the reader as well as it could.
